From Global News.
Dozens of vehicles have been involved in a major series of collisions on highway 401 in eastern Ontario. Ontario Provincial Police say about 50 vehicles were caught in multiple crashes near Trenton. Five people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries; however, officials say there were no fatalities or serious injuries.
Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan described an act of heroism from one of the occupants caught in the chaos. “One of the truck drivers that went off into the ditch came over and there was a woman trapped between the two trucks that were on fire. She couldn’t get out and he smashed the back window out with his bare hand, broke his hand and removed her from the vehicle,” he said.
One of the pileups involved more than a dozen vehicles, including a tractor-trailer fire that has since been extinguished. Police say a prolonged closure is expected as the cleanup and investigation continues.
