Aid agencies are blaming a violent crackdown against protesters in Iran for thousands of deaths, while government officials pin responsibility on outside agitators for clashes between security forces and citizens.

The protests, which began in response to soaring inflation, have spiralled into one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s clerical establishment since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Despite all that, the regime is showing very few cracks.
