Responding to questions Thursday about meetings between Alberta separatists and officials within the Trump administration, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he expects the U.S. to “respect Canadian sovereignty.”

Carney told reporters he has raised the topic of Canadian sovereignty with President Donald Trump but said that during those conversations, the U.S. leader did not bring up Alberta separatism.

Carney echoed comments from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who said she would raise the issue with her delegates in Washington and Ottawa.
Their comments come after U.S. Treasure Secretary Scott Bessent appeared to throw his support behind the separatist movement in Alberta, becoming the highest-ranking individual within the Trump administration to do so.

B.C. Premier David Eby reiterated his earlier comments on the topic, suggesting that Alberta separatists participated in “treasonous activity” by meeting with Trump officials.
