From Global News.
A police operation in Rio de Janeiro, the deadliest in Brazil’s history, killed at least 132 people, according to the Rio public defender’s office, more than double the initial toll reported by state authorities. Governor Claudio Castro said on Wednesday the official count stood at 58, but expected it to rise as forensic teams continued their work.
Castro stated that all those killed were likely criminals, as the clash occurred in a forested area, not a populated neighbourhood. He added that life in the city was returning to normal, with public transport and businesses resuming operations.
The operation targeted the Comando Vermelho gang, which controls drug trafficking in several of Rio’s favelas. The raid came days before the city is set to host global climate events, including the C40 summit and the Earthshot Prize.
Civil society groups and the U.N. Human Rights office criticized the high death toll, calling for investigations into the use of lethal force in marginalized communities.
