Socialist wins Portugal presidency, anti-establishment opponent gains influence

From Global News.

Antonio José Seguro won the Portuguese presidential election on Sunday, beating his far-right, anti-establishment opponent André Ventura in a runoff vote.

“I accept with great humility, enormous emotion and confidence the position that the Portuguese people have just entrusted to me as their president of the republic,” Seguro told his supporters.

The final round of voting commenced amid a succession of storms over the past week which failed to deter voters, with turnout reaching around the same level as the first round of voting on Jan. 18.

With 95 per cent of the votes counted, Seguro secured around 66 per cent and Ventura 34 per cent respectively.
