From Global News.
During a visit to Dubai for the World Governments Summit on Tuesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez revealed his government’s plans to ban social media for minors under the age of 16.
After Australia, Spain will become the second nation to implement such measures. Why? Sanchez’s left-wing coalition government has repeatedly complained about the proliferation of inappropriate and hurtful content on social media, saying it has negative effects on youths.
“Our children are exposed to a space they were never meant to navigate alone,” Sanchez said. “A space of addiction, abuse, pornography, manipulation, violence; we will no longer accept that. We will protect them from the digital wild west,” he added.
Sanchez vowed an age-verification system with “real barriers that work” would soon be implemented – and many Spaniards expressed positivity about this Tuesday.
The Spanish government will also introduce a bill next week to hold social media executives accountable for illegal and hate-speech content, as well as to criminalize algorithmic manipulation and the amplification of illegal content, Sanchez said.
