Swiss bar engulfed in flames on NYD has no safety inspections since 2019, town mayor says

From Global News.

Five days after the devastating bar fire that killed 40 people and injured dozens others in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, town mayor Nicolas Feraud has spoken out, revealing no safety inspections were carried out on the tavern in over five years.

"Periodic [fire] inspections were not carried out between 2020 and 2025… We deeply regret this," Feraud told reporters on Tuesday.

The blaze which tore through the beloved Le Constellation early New Year’s Day is believed to have been caused by sparkling candles which may have ignited the ceiling of the bar’s basement – which was reportedly covered in a foam material used for soundproofing.

Feraud confirmed that the town’s 128 public buildings will be inspected by a specialized safety firm “as quickly as possible,” adding that the use of any pyrotechnics inside public places will be immediately prohibited.
