From Global News.
Protests are underway in Italy as the U.S. has deployed Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Milan ahead of the 2026 Olympics opening ceremony.
Not only did demonstrators from across the globe condemn the current political climate in the U.S., but athletes from Team USA did so as well.
“It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard,” Hunter Hess, an Olympian freestyle skier said. “There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t,” he added.
ICE and the U.S. Border Patrol have faced mass scrutiny over the last two months following the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal immigration agents — both in Minneapolis, Minn.
“We need to focus on respecting everybody’s rights and making sure that we’re treating our citizens as well as anybody with love and respect,” Beijing 2022 Olympic gold medallist Christ Lillis told reporters. “I hope that when people look at athletes competing in the Olympics, they realize that that’s the America that we’re trying to represent,” he added.
