The impact of industrial fishing in the Azores | DW Documentary

From DW Documentary.

In the Azores, an autonomous region in Portugal, tuna fishing is done the way it has been for generations: one fisherman, one rod, one fish at a time. Nets are banned. Every catch is monitored and recorded.

But despite their efforts to keep fishing as selective and sustainable as possible, the Azores fishermen are struggling to make ends meet. Because of overfishing, the EU imposed fishing quotas that could run them out of business.

Local fishermen say they are frustrated because it’s not their fault the quotas have to be implemented. They say waters are depleted thanks to industrial fishing fleets casting out gigantic purse seine nets further out at sea, where they can easily evade monitoring.
