Born Matoaka, the "playful" daughter of the powerful Chief Powhatan, her life became a central pawn in the high-stakes clash between the Powhatan Confederacy and the struggling English settlers of Jamestown. From her disputed rescue of John Smith to her strategic marriage to tobacco planter John Rolfe, and her tragic final days as a "civilized" curiosity in the smoky streets of London, we peel back the layers of colonial propaganda. Using both English records and the oral traditions of the Mattaponi tribe, we explore whether Pocahontas was a willing bridge between two worlds or a victim of kidnapping, trauma, and a global political game that ultimately cost her everything.
