Trial begins in Paris for Tariq Ramadan, accused of raping three women | AFP

The trial of Swiss Muslim academic Tariq Ramadan for the rape of three women in France between 2009 and 2016, which he denies, opens before the Paris Criminal Court in Ramadan’s absence, who is hospitalised in Switzerland. The 63-year-old preacher, already convicted by Swiss courts of rape in another case, was due to appear before a court composed solely of professional judges, but has been hospitalised in Geneva for multiple sclerosis treatment since Saturday, 28 February, according to Marie Burguburu, one of his lawyers. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
