U.S. President Donald Trump called Venezuela opposition leader María Corina Machado "a very fine woman" on Friday after she gifted her Nobel Peace Prize to the president at the White House the day before.

"She said, You know, you’ve ended eight wars, and nobody deserves this prize more in history than you do," Trump told reporters in Washington.

The Nobel Institute has said Machado could not just give her prize to Trump, an honour that he has long coveted.
