While the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution bars someone from being elected president more than twice, President Donald Trump and his allies have raised the possibility that he could seek a third term.
On Monday, the president did not directly answer a reporter’s question about the subject. He said that he “would love to do it,” but when asked if he was not ruling out a third term, he responded, “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me.”
Trump did say, however, that he did not want to be elected vice president.
“I would rule that out, because it’s too cute,” he said when asked about the possibility. “I think the people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It wouldn’t be right.”
The issue came back into the spotlight following The Economist’s recent interview with former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon. He said that Trump will win reelection in 2028, “and people just ought to get accommodated with that.”
Yet, the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.” The amendment also specifies that if someone who was not elected president has filled the role for more than two years, they can only be elected to the nation’s highest office once.
When asked about the 22nd Amendment, Bannon said, “There’s many different alternatives. At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is. But there’s a plan.”
