Thousands of people gathered in Jerusalem for a mass ultra-Orthodox Jewish rally against military conscription — a debate that has long caused tensions within Israel’s deeply divided society and placed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under increasing political strain over the past year.

The protest turned deadly when a 15-year-old boy fell to his death, according to Israeli ambulance service. Police said they opened an investigation into the incident.
