From This Old House.
Our project house was built in 1864—prior to indoor wiring. The Saratoga house has undergone significant changes throughout its life—but seems to have skipped over knob-and-tube that came on the scene in the 1880s and was used into the 1940s. Electrician Stephen Ristau has some theories based on the fact that the whole house is wired with BX cable—a system that became popular in the 1930s, but is now at the end of its useful life. He shares his plans with Kevin O’Connor as they rip out the last of the BX and start running temporary power for Matt Whitbeck and his crew to move forward safely.
