During a theatrical State of the Union address in Washington on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his views that Iran – which he called “terrible” – should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

“I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon. Can’t let that happen,” Trump said.

The U.S. has long accused Iran of plotting to build nuclear weapons, whereas, President Masoud Pezeshkian says the intent is to use nuclear energy in a peaceful and beneficial matter for the Iranian people.

Despite his critiques of the Iranian regime, the Republican leader said his preference was to “solve this problem through diplomacy” – this months after half a year after U.S. B-2 stealth bombers decimated dozens of Iran’s nuclear targets.

A second round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran last week ended without a deal to curtail the nuclear program in question.
