U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed doubt that European countries could retaliate against President Donald Trump after his continued threats to annex Greenland.

“I am confident that the leaders will not escalate and that this will work out in a manner that ends up in a very good place for all,” Bessent said at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday – casting doubt on reports that suggest so.

In his latest efforts to take over the autonomous Danish territory, Trump threatened to slam eight European nations with further tariffs if they continued to push back against his territorial goal – one he claims will benefit America’s “national security.”

Bessent questioned what he called the “rapid rejection” of Trump’s plans in the Arctic, and urged countries to “have an open mind” before the president delivers remarks on the matter at the WEF on Wednesday.
