From Global News.
A video posted to social media of a group of Mandarin-speaking sailors hauling crab traps in Vancouver’s Harbour is being investigated over multiple violations of harvesting regulations.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Port of Vancouver said they are aware of the video and said it shows that many of the crab appear to be undersized and female.
It’s also illegal to pull crab traps at night, as shown in the video, while the possession limit is four per person – according to the online captions, the crew hauled in over 440 pounds of crab.
Penalties for poaching crab can range from a $500 ticket, with fines running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and the court-imposed seizure of fishing gear and the vessel involved. Catherine Urquhart reports.
