When it comes to climate science, around two-thirds of people are concerned about the warming planet, said Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy and distinguished professor and endowed chair at Texas Tech University.
But misinformation and disinformation on climate change has been “rampant,” she added. When people see misinformation, largely about solutions, Hayhoe said, they can start to believe “the cure is worse than the disease.”
“There are huge amounts of people who really do want accurate information but they don’t have a way of parsing it out, and the algorithms are being flooded by misinformation,” Hayhoe said.
Hayhoe took part in a special livestreamed Reddit “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) event called “Tipping Point – Turning Science Into Solutions,” hosted by science correspondent Miles O’Brien and digital anchor and correspondent Deema Zein.
