WATCH: Intelligence community has ‘disparate opinions’ about Havana syndrome’s cause, CIA head says

From PBS NewsHour.

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., questioned CIA Director John Ratcliffe about recent reporting on "Havana syndrome," a group of what the government has called "anomalous health incidents," or AHI. In these incidents, American diplomatic and intelligence personnel experienced traumatic brain injuries, vertigo, loss of balance, cognitive issues and other physical ailments.

CBS News’ "60 Minutes" recently reported details about "a classified microwave weapon" that could explain the injuries. The report also noted that the weapon has been tested on animals in a U.S. military lab for more than a year.

Ratcliffe told Rounds that "there are disparate opinions across" the U.S. intelligence community about the cause of Havana syndrome. He said that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard "would undertake a comprehensive review of that issue" so that "it is getting the attention that it deserves." Ratcliffe also noted that more information will be available in the closed-door, classified portion of the hearing.

Top U.S. intelligence officials were testifying Wednesday before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence at an open hearing on worldwide threats. It’s the first of two days of hearings on Capitol Hill surrounding the intelligence community’s release of its annual assessment of threats to national security.

The Senate hearing comes a day after National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent resigned over President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Kent, a former Green Beret and CIA official known for his past ties to right-wing extremists, said in a statement Tuesday that Iran "posed no imminent threat" to the U.S. and he could not "in good conscience" support the war.
