If Hamas does not back his possible plan to end the war in Gaza, President Donald Trump said Israel would “have our full backing to do what you would have to do.”
The president made the statement during a joint press availability with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday at the White House.
“Israel would have my full backing to finish the job of destroying the threat of Hamas, but I hope that we’re going to have a deal for peace,” Trump said.
The president said that he has “a feeling that we’re going to have a positive answer” from Hamas about the potential plan, which calls for, among other things, an immediate end to the war, economic development of the Gaza Strip, a swap of hostages and prisoners between Hamas and Israel, the creation of a transitional “Board of Peace” headed by Trump and an Israeli pledge not to occupy or annex Gaza.
