WATCH: Johnson ‘not 100% sure’ if troops will get paid this week

From PBS NewsHour.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday that he’s not "100% sure" if active duty service members will be paid at the end of the week, as the government shutdown continues.

"Their next check is due at the end of this week, and we’re not 100% sure” if paychecks will go out, Johnson said at a news conference. "Now I do know the administration and everybody is bending over backwards to try to figure that out."

PBS News’ Lisa Desjardins asked Johnson about military pay and if he knew the identity of the anonymous donor who gave $130 million to help pay troops.

"I have not asked the president for the identity of that person because they want to remain anonymous, and I respect that," Johnson said. "I’ve heard the rumors, but I’m not 100% certain.”

President Donald Trump announced last week at the White House that a "friend" offered the donation to the Pentagon to help cover any shortfalls due to the shutdown.

In mid-October, the Trump administration used about $8 billion of unobligated military research funds to pay troops.
