From Global News.
Just hours after Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed a new agreement which aims to lay the groundwork for a new pipeline to the Pacific Coast, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed repeated doubts Canadians will ever see such a pipeline.
After being met with an indirect response to his question about “what year” the proposed bitumen pipeline would be built, Poilievre doubled down, asking Liberal MPs “what decade” construction would begin.
Carney’s “Memorandum of Understanding” says Ottawa’s approval of the pipeline would be based on whether the project is seen as being in the national interest and “provides opportunities for Indigenous co-ownership and shared economic benefits.”
However, both the Government of British Columbia and several Western First Nations are opposing the concept, reminding the federal government of B.C.’s oil tanker ban, which will ultimately stand in the way.
And with Carney and his Cabinet insisting they will consult with BC Premier David Eby and relevant First Nations.
