U.S. officials are speaking out a day after President Donald Trump made the decision to end ongoing trade negotiations with Canada.
Trump’s decision came in response to an Ontario-funded anti-tariff commercial that used quotes from the late and former U.S. president Ronald Reagan. Trump claimed the Doug Ford ad represented “egregious behaviour” aimed at influencing U.S. court decisions.
Questioned by reporters on the Republican leader’s decision Friday, White House Advisor Kevin Hassett accredited the move to a number of factors, including a “lack of flexibility” from Prime Minister Mark Carney – who he said is “difficult to negotiate with” – and “frustration [that] has built over time.”
Addressing the matter in Israel, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had not yet spoken to Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand due to extensive travelling.
