Why Canadians shouldn’t expect “special treatment” when it comes to US trade negotiations

From Global News.

Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. have resumed in Washington after President Donald Trump slammed the door on negotiations six months ago. But does Canada need to tread lightly this time around?

In this ‘The West Block’ exclusive, Jackon Proskow gains insight from Canadian trade expert Carlo Dade, founder of the New Norrh America Initiative, who thinks Canadians overall need to prepare to make concessions and not expect to receive “special treatment” from the Republican administration.

Dade tells The West Block that counter-tariffs, imposed only by Canada and China, are something “not forgotten” in Washington, iterating that Canada isn’t the only nation facing tariffs right now.

“Welcome to the club,” Dade joked, before saying trade tensions have produced a “sense of entitlement” from the Canadian side in the last year — one, he says, that Washington likely finds “baffling and annoying.”
