Hospitals in rural parts of the country, where some 60 million Americans live, operate under fragile economies. Since 2005, more than 100 rural hospitals have closed and over 40% of them currently operate at a loss. That can jeopardize the lives of a population that is older on average and has worse health outcomes than people in metro areas.
