The widow of Jamal Khashoggi – a former Washington Post journalist – is speaking out after U.S. President Donald Trump defended Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after his role in her husband’s death.
Khashoggi was a U.S. resident who wrote opinion columns critical of bin Salman‘s policies. In 2018, he was killed and dismembered by a team of operatives linked to the prince in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, reports by U.S. intelligence agencies found.
“A lot of people didn’t like that gentleman [Khashoggi] that you’re talking about, whether you like him or didn’t like him,” Trump told a reporter who challenged bin Salman’s visit to the Oval Office on Tuesday. “Things happened, but he [bin Salman] knew nothing about it,” the president added.
“His [Trump’s] justification for the crime upsets me,” Khashoggi’s widow Hanan Elatr Khashoggi said in an interview later that day.
“I felt very bad because [Trump] described someone else, not Jamal. And I wish one day I [could] meet with President Trump… and share with him [who the] real Jamal [is],” she added.
