Gentoo penguins at Edinburgh Zoo have been picking out pebbles hand-painted by children at a nearby hospital to present as a gift to a mate.
This species of penguin is known to gather stones during breeding season to build nests. According to Edinburgh Zoo, pebbles are “a vital part” of courtship rituals and “stealing stones from neighbours is common and often leads to noisy arguments”.
