Canada needs to do more to address growing electricity demand, new report says

From Global News.

A new report suggests Canada’s provincial government must move quickly if they are to keep electricity rates affordable, especially as artificial intelligence (AI) puts added pressure on power grids.

“In Canada, we’ve taken cheap electricity, abundant electricity for granted,” says Heather Exner-Pirot, Macdonald-Laurier institute’s director of energy, natural resources and environment.

She says investment in data centres has increased demand for electricity in a big way.

As Drew Stremick explains, one province is already restructuring how it manages the grid and looking ahead to future power sources.
