Kurds across Syria and Turkey marked Nowruz with bonfires, dancing and large gatherings in Damascus, Afrin and Diyarbakir.

In Syria, this year’s celebrations followed a government decree formally recognizing the festival and restoring rights to Kurdish citizens.

Crowds waved flags, lit fires and celebrated in the streets, while some also voiced political demands.

"This is the first time in the history of Syria, in 2026, that Nowruz has been recognised by the new government, and we are very happy," one Afrin resident said.
