The White House says it has fired the director Susan Monarez after a tense confrontation with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Lawyers for CDC Director Susan Monarez said Wednesday evening that she would not leave her post as a top public health official, despite attempts by White House officials and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to oust her for "protecting the public" over "a political agenda."
