Canada Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is holding a press conference in Brampton, Ont., on Friday, where he will make an announcement on "amending the Criminal Code."

Poilievre has long been an advocate for stricter rules on law and criminal punishment.

The federal Conservatives say they will introduce legislation in the fall that would amend the Criminal Code to prevent judges from considering immigration status in sentencing.

Last Monday, the Conservative leader won the byelection in the federal Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot on Monday after being ousted from his previously held Ottawa-area riding of Carleton in April’s federal election by Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy.

Poilievre says the Conservatives will hold Prime Minister Mark Carney “accountable” when Parliament returns in the fall.
