Winnipeg police are expected to provide an update Thursday afternoon after eight people were stabbed in what authorities are describing as a "mass casualty event" at Hollow Water First Nation.

A Shared Health spokesperson said the patients are suffering from varying levels of injuries, and that two were airlifted to Health Sciences Centre via STARS helicopter, and six were transported by ambulance.

Manitoba RCMP say residents of Hollow Water can expect a heavy police presence — involving officers from multiple detachments and specialized units — throughout the day, although there is no risk to public safety.
