From Global News.
Criminal justice reform remains a political issue in Canada and many politicians have suggested change to issues such as bail reform.
But while politicians have made promises, criminal lawyer Michael Spratt says achieving such changes within the Canadian Constitution could be more difficult.
"You have to start from the principle that not everyone charged or accused of a crime is guilty of that crime, that’s why we have the presumption of innocence," he told Global News.
When it comes to bail reform specifically, Spratt says more people than ever are being denied conditional release in this country and proposals to eliminate bail reform for entire classes of alleged offences is unconstitutional.
