Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that the push by Canada and other countries to recognize a Palestinian state was "necessary" because of what is happening in Gaza.

"It’s necessary in our judgment and the judgment of most other countries in the world that we have to push on this now because, as I say, the possibility, in absolute violation of the UN Charter and absolute violation of international law of self-determination for the Palestinian peoples is being erased," Carney said.

He said Canada, along with other countries, are "at minimum" trying to create conditions for a ceasefire and a peace process following that.
