For the first time since 2018, and the 15th time since 1981, American lawmakers are facing the possibility of a government shutdown.
 
Neither party has been able to pass the required spending bills for 2026 due to a stalemate over healthcare tax credits.
 
If a resolution is not reached by midnight, numerous agencies will either cease operations or be staffed by individuals working without pay.
