Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, US Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Pete Aguilar discuss the government shutdown at respective press conferences on Wednesday. The government is likely to stay closed for at least a few days. The House is not in session this week. Senate leaders say they plan to send members home later Wednesday for the Yom Kippur Jewish holiday, returning Friday with plans to work through the weekend if a shutdown persists.
