Online scams steal emotional videos of the elderly to sell products

As a retired public relations specialist, Barbara Kingsley was no stranger to social media, but it wasn’t until after Donald Trump’s second election that she was moved to create a TikTok account. Alarmed by a barrage of executive orders in early 2025, she published an emotional plea urging her fellow citizens to join protests around the country.

She was pleasantly surprised when her video went viral but then dismayed to discover it had also been stolen and used to sell products. She’s just one of many elderly people whose videos are being used without their permission in online ads, a trend that spans several languages.

Kingsley now publishes on a new TikTok account using her nickname, @buzziebeeteacher0.
