The German government announced Wednesday it would give police the power to shoot down rogue drones, like those that have disrupted airports across Europe.

Some European leaders have suggested the incursions are part of a hybrid war being waged by Russia.

The new law, which is awaiting parliamentary approval, explicitly authorizes police to shoot down drones that violate German airspace in cases of acute threat or serious harm. Police will also have the power to disable drones that pose a threat by using jammers or lasers.

Germany’s interior minister said a dedicated drone unit would be created within the federal police and that researchers would also consult with Israel and Ukraine on advanced drone technologies.
