In his most recent act of philanthropy, Microsoft co-founder billionaire Bill Gates has promised US$912 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Gates made the pledge Monday while urging the U.S. – and other wealthy nations – to reverse the cuts its government has made to global health funding since President Donald Trump took office again in January.

“We’re definitely in dialogue with all of the rich countries, saying, ‘Hey, you. Of all the government money you spend, this is saving lives way more effectively. And, please, for the most generous: [you should] provide up to 2 per cent of your budget.’”

Asked if he has “agreed to disagree” with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his controversial view of vaccines, Gates said yes, noting that he’d like to collaborate with the politician in “some areas” given the government’s large research budget.
