“Dead are lying there on the ground”: Over 800 killed in 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan

From Global News.

Hundreds are dead following a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck a mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan close to the border with Pakistan, local officials said on Monday.

The disaster, one of the country’s worst earthquakes, has killed over 800 people and injured at least 2,800 others in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, authorities said.

Rescuers were battling to reach remote mountainous areas cut off from mobile networks along the Pakistani border, where mudbrick homes dotting the slopes collapsed in the quake.

"I want the government to come and help us, to remove our injured and dead from the ground. Everything here has been destroyed," Ahmed Gul, a Kunar resident, said.
