U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra said Wednesday that he was "genuinely optimistic" that a new trade and security deal between the two countries was possible.

"I am genuinely optimistic that we will get to a point where we will have a trade deal," Hoekstra said. "A trade agreement that will be enduring, it will build off the success that we have had, and that you will look at and say, ‘ah, more opportunity, more opportunity.’"

He added while people might say it took "too long" to get to this point, he believes whatever deal is reached will be "enduring" and provide more opportunity.
