Laying Landscape Fabric and Black Plastic Weed Barrier in the Garden

From Family Plot.

Plastic sheet mulches are commonly used in vegetable and flower gardens to control weeds and manage soil conditions.

UT Extension Specialist Walter Battle shows how to lay sheet mulches in a garden. He also gives the pros and cons of both plastic sheeting and woven landscape fabric their differences in permeability, durability, and weed suppression.

Plastic sheeting blocks light effectively but does not allow water to pass through, requiring drip irrigation underneath the plastic. Woven fabric is porous, allowing rain and irrigation to reach the soil while still limiting weed growth. Both materials help maintain a clean garden layout and reduce time spent managing weeds.

Standard black plastic is generally single-use and must be removed at the end of the growing season. Landscape fabric may last multiple seasons with proper care.
