Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in medicine Monday for discoveries about how the immune system avoids attacking the body.

Brunkow learned of the prize from an AP photographer after ignoring a call from Sweden, thinking it was spam.
