Norway’s salmon crisis | DW Documentary

From DW Documentary.

Norway should be the perfect home for Atlantic salmon. The country’s rivers and fjords have nurtured the species for centuries. But today, wild salmon are in steep decline. Climate change, hydroelectric dams, and human industry are pushing them closer to extinction. A major driver of the decline is open-net salmon farming. Millions of fish are packed into offshore cages, the perfect breeding ground for parasites, like sea lice. And with open nets, everything seeps into the sea: waste, disease, even dead fish. Wild salmon migrating between rivers and the ocean pass by these farms and also become infested.
