‘Our South Africa moment’ – Head of Palestinian mission to UK reacts to statehood | DW News

From DW News.

The Palestinian diplomatic mission in London marked the United Kingdom’s formal recognition of the state of Palestine, announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Husam Zomlot, the head of the mission, compared the development to the United States’ taking a position on South African apartheid. In 1986, US Congress passed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, overturning President Ronald Reagan’s appeasement approach toward the South African government. Zomlot said that once again, the United States was one of the last holdouts worldwide to not yet recognize Palestinian statehood, but that the recognition of the UK would add to the pressure on Washington to do the same.
