There are tens of thousands of Maya descendants in Belize. Maria Garcia is one of them. She is a healer who is preserving her ancestors’ knowledge of medicinal plants. But the forests and nature on which the Maya rely are under threat from logging and climate change.
Maria Garcia founded an organization that protects 5,000 hectares of rainforest. Together with a group of rangers, the organization patrols the area to keep it safe.
“The rangers are the soul of this park. They are the ones who take care of everything – from the logging to the looting, to the hunting. When you know the struggle […] then you know how important this area is and you will fight for it with all your heart. It’s not about the money. It’s about preserving the balance that we have. Because our sacred lands are fast disappearing,” says Maria.
