“Quite shocking”: Afghanistan earthquake death toll surpasses 1,400

From Global News.

A major earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed over 1,400 people and injured more than 3,000, according to figures reported by the Taliban, and the United Nations warns that figure could climb even higher.

The earthquake struck Sunday night, flattening entire villages and trapping people under rubble. Meanwhile, rough terrain has hampered rescue efforts.
UNICEF Afghanistan says the health-care system is responding to the tragedy “with difficulty,” adding that hospitals are “stretched.”

Global’s Miranda Anthistle speaks with Salam Al-Janabi, communications director at UNICEF Afghanistan, who says efforts are being made to bring in more nurses and medical equipment and that rescue teams are finally accessing harder to reach areas.
