Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was "disappointed" on Wednesday after the federal government wouldn’t sign off on a proposal that would send 30 beluga whales in captivity at Marineland to China.

He said he was "encouraging the federal government to allow (Ontario) to make sure these whales survive in a really great atmosphere or a new home."

The federal government would not grant an export permit to ship the 30 whales to the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom aquarium, Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said Wednesday.
