“Suspicious”: 5 people critically hurt in Toronto-area house fire

From Global News.

Five people were taken to hospital after a fire ripped through a Richmond Hill, Ont., home early Monday morning.

Police said five people were taken to hospital; three of them with life-threatening injuries. In an update Monday afternoon, police said all five people were now listed as being in critical condition.

Jim Kettles, an operations manager with the Office of the Fire Marshal, told reporters at the scene Richmond Hill firefighters had to rescue four people from the home.

Of the five people taken to hospital, four were adults and one was a youth, he added.

Outside a nearby Catholic school, part of a field was behind police tape on Monday because a gas can was discovered there. York Regional Police can’t say if it’s connected with the fire, but do say it’s "suspicious."

Global’s Sean O’Shea reports.
